Overview

Almost 90 percent of adult smokers begin smoking at or before age 18. Currently, almost 21 percent of youth in Wisconsin smoke.

Research shows that the most effective strategies to prevent youth smoking include:

Increase the price of cigarettes
Raising the price per pack of cigarettes is the single most effective way to keep Wisconsin youth from smoking.

Provide smoke-free environments
Smoke-free ordinances reduce youth smoking. Kids that grow up in smoke-free environments at home and in communities with strong anti-smoking policies are less likely to become smokers.

Media campaigns
Aggressive media campaigns that educate youth about tobacco industry manipulation are more effective than soft campaigns that talk about the dangers of smoking.
