Poverty Network

Low socioeconomic status is the single greatest predictor of tobacco use.

The Wisconsin Network on Tobacco Prevention & Poverty's primary goal is to help organizations move beyond their mission and incorporate tobacco prevention interventions into their already established services.

Network members come from all sectors: the faith community, correctional and job training facilities, health care and treatment centers, shelters and food pantries, and public health agencies.

Examples of Network Projects:
  • Identify organizational barriers to implementing tobacco prevention services.
Want to learn how your organization can help? The Beyond Your Mission: Addressing Tobacco's Impact DVD shows how organizations should and can address tobacco use in the populations they serve.

  • Identify barriers to quitting for low income populations.
Focus groups have been held with the homeless population in Madison to identify barriers to quitting. The Community Action Coalition created a tobacco support group specifically for low income women.

  • Create Tools.
An example of a resource that has been created is Tobacco Prevention & Cessation in the Culture of Poverty.
